Canine hepatitis is a disease different from that of humans and, thanks to vaccines, it is becoming less frequent to find it among our pets. However, there are still isolated cases, so it is worth knowing about the symptoms of hepatitis in dogs.

Hepatitis symptoms in dogs

Canine viral hepatitis is caused by adenovirus type 1 and is spread through direct contact with this virus through the feces, urine or saliva of an infected dog. It is a very resistant virus that can remain inside the dog and its surroundings for months after the symptoms of the disease disappear.

Hepatitis symptoms in dogs can vary considerably depending on the severity of each case.

Symptoms of mild canine viral hepatitis

If the condition of the dog is not serious, the symptoms that are usually found are:

  • Fever, which is not usually very high
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Diarrhea
  • Seizures, which usually indicates that the dog, in addition to hepatitis, has distemper. These two diseases often occur in parallel.
  • Blue eye: There are often cases of corneal edema. In fact, sometimes this is the only symptom of canine hepatitis that is perceived.

Symptoms of acute or severe canine hepatitis

  • In the initial phase, the dog is very lethargic
  • Tonsillitis is not very common but it can be very dangerous
  • High fever
  • Swollen glands
  • Mucosal redness
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of appetite
  • Sensitivity of the eyes to light
  • Jaundice
  • Bleeding gums
  • Liver pain when palpating the abdomen
  • Abdomen hard and tense by pain

Hepatitis in dogs can be treated, but there is a risk of death, especially among younger dogs. Therefore, the best is always prevention. Vaccinate your dog against hepatitis!
