The cat is a living being, but for it to be that way for many years it must eat. Although this is something he does by instinct, and also several times a day, the reality is that in case of problems or changes he can stop feeding.

For those humans who adore our feline, seeing him reject food is one of the saddest and most painful experiences we can have, especially when the days go by and we don't notice any improvement. Therefore, if you are wondering why my cat does not want to eat, in this article I will explain what are the possible causes and what steps you should take to help you.

He doesn't like food

It is usually the most frequent cause. A change of feed, or the passage of feed to homemade food or Barf, or vice versa, may render the cat unappetizing. Therefore, the best thing to do in these cases is to gradually get used to your new diet, putting more and more quantities of the new mixed with the "old."

Further, you have to try to stimulate your appetite with some food that you love, such as cans of wet food, cooked meat or fish (without bones / bones), or with pieces of ham.

The feeder is in a bad place

The cat is an animal that, in its natural habitat, has its sources of water and food and its "bath" very separate. You should do it if you want to prevent a predator from finding it. But nevertheless, At home you often put your feeder near the water and / or the sandbox, which is a mistake.

If that's your case, put it as far as you can, at least from your WC. He thinks that he does not find it pleasant to eat feeling the smell of bowel movements.

With regard to water, I myself confess that I have food right next to it and my hairy people have no problems with this. Now, if yours did not eat, to rule out possible causes, try to put the drinking fountain 1-2 meters away from its feeder.

In hot weather, both humans and cats tend to reduce our food intake. This is something completely normal and, in principle, we should not worry. However, if you stop eating, then you have to give it specific wet food for these animals, because with it we will also be able to stay hydrated.

And it is that thirst is one of the most serious problems that our furry can have: if they spend more than 3 days without drinking anything, their life is in serious danger of death. Of course, you should not give any can: only those that do NOT have cereals will be the ones that will feed you the most.

Hair balls

The hairballs, called tricobezoars, are formed when the cat ingests a too high amount of hair when grooming. When they form, they accumulate in the intestine preventing you from having a bowel movement, and consequently, causing you to lose your appetite. To fix it you have to spread a leg with pharmaceutical paraffin, although if it does not improve it is best to take it to the veterinarian.

If what you want is to prevent this from happening, brush it daily and put some malt in your paw once a day.

Poisoning

Without knowing it, sometimes we can give it a spoiled food, or it may go out and eat something it shouldn't. In these cases, in addition to the lack of appetite, you will have other symptoms, such as nausea and / or vomiting, seizures, diarrhea, disorientation and / or loss of consciousness.

Because, before the slightest suspicion of poisoning you have to go quickly to the vet.

The cat doesn't like changes at all. When we move, or we introduce a new member to the family, we go through a season of stress or anxiety, or a loved one dies, you will immediately notice and stop eating.

Thus, It is very important to pay close attention and ensure that you live a life as happy and calm as possible. If your behavior changes and we do not know how to help you, it is highly advisable to ask for advice from a professional (therapist or feline ethologist) who works using positive reinforcement techniques.

Disease

There are various diseases that can cause loss of appetite in the cat: such as stomatitis gingivitis, leukemia or PIF, among others.

So if in addition to stopping eating you have symptoms such as halitosis (bad breath), vomiting, diarrhea, or any other that makes us suspect that you are not well, the visit to the veterinarian is mandatory.

If you have had a traumatic accident, for example, if you have been hit, then could stop eating. To give you an idea: one of my hairy had a bad leg for quite some time (months, 2-3) because of an outrage. I didn't use it at all. He supported her on the floor and complained of pain.

For a day and a half he ate absolutely nothing, and even afterwards he ate little because when defecating, of course, he had to push and, in doing so, felt pain. He was in treatments with edemas and laxatives, in addition to medications that relieve pain, for almost 3 months.

What to do? Give tasty food, like cans. This will serve to stimulate your appetite.

What if my kitten doesn't want to eat?

The kitten that has no appetite you have to take it to the vet urgently. You have to think that your body is very small: you can dehydrate quickly. Also, you should keep in mind that you should eat 4-5 and up to 8 times a day (the younger you are, the more times you should eat food).

If it is a newborn feline, if 12 hours pass and you have not wanted to drink milk, then, I will be direct and sincere: I could die as soon as you expect it. To avoid this, you must ensure that you are with your mother until you reach two months of age, and if you cannot be there, you should be given replacement milk purchased at a veterinary clinic or at an animal store.

And with this we finish. As we have seen, a cat stops eating should worry us ... and much.

I hope you find this article useful.
